* The UMB connects directly to the SDU2000 Tekk radio (or other data radios)with a D-Sub-9 connector.

*A controller board or computer system connects to the UMB using the 10-pin header, implementing a 3-wire RS-232 serial connection.

Data is sent and received to and from the UMB using ASCII messages across an RS-232 serial link.

The <esn> field is the exact equivalent of an ANI field, which allows the on-air separation of messages. Thus, a many-to-many communication scheme may be easily implemented.
